Abstract – This article attempts to conceptualize the failure of the learner’s entrepreneurial act and to propose a typology. The conceptualization and typology proposed here are articulated around three dimensions. The first dimension is based on environment-based approaches and the context of young firms that play a predominant role in the entrepreneurial context. The second dimension ascribes an important role to entrepreneurial training. In this perspective, we rely on the theory of the planned behaviour of Ajzen and the model of the entrepreneurial event of Shapero and Sokol (1982). The third dimension ascribes an important role to rationality, the logic of the entrepreneurial act and the construction of meaning. According to this vision, and by mobilizing the theory of decision, the failure of the act of undertaking is due to the absence of one or more dimensions of the decision to undertake. The combination of these three dimensions allows us to identify a typology of eight scenarios or categories of failure. Therefore, we have opposed the ‘failure of the transition to the entrepreneurial act’ to the ‘passage to the entrepreneurial act’. Between these two extremes we distinguished, respectively, three scenarios of ‘marginal failure’ and three scenarios of ‘partial failure’. This work, of which the theoretical aim is interesting due to its conceptual contribution, is a result of the transition failure to the entrepreneurial act and its various factors. The managerial interest lies in the diagnosis of the learners’ failing situations.
