Abstract: This paper reflects on the concept of performances as a form of communication from a “communicative constitution of organizing” (CCO) perspective. The analysis of the French feminist activist group La Barbe shows how spectacular performances can replace more traditional organizing structures or processes. The importance of performances in the group’s structure is all the more impressive as there are few other mechanisms ensuring the cooperation of activists and the sustainability of the group over time. In addition to exploring how performances can replace traditional organizing structures, this paper contributes to the debates in CCO about the ontological nature of organizations and their boundaries; representing organizations as delimited areas with a clear frontier seems excessive, as membership is not binary; the image of a bonfire seems more relevant: individuals can be close or distant to the center of the organization, and contribute at different levels, with no clear demarcation.
